Diagnosing Asperger Syndrome can be difficult because its characteristics often resemble those of autism, attention-deficit disorder, learning disabilities, and even behavior disorders. With the ASDS, however, you can quickly rule out other diagnoses and determine the likelihood that a child or adolescent has Asperger Syndrome.
This easy-to-use rating scale can be completed by anyone who knows the child or teen--a relative, teacher, or therapist, for example. Designed for youngsters 5 through 18 years of age, it includes 50 yes-or-no items covering 5 areas of behavior:

  Cognitive Social
    Maladaptive Sensorimotor
    Language

The ASDS produces a total score that can be used to identify individuals with Asperger Syndrome. It also gives you scale scores for the five areas mentioned above. These provide clinically relevant information about how the child's performance compares to that of others with Asperger Syndrome.
Completed in just 10 to 15 minutes, this test is a good place to start when you suspect that a child may have Asperger Syndrome. It often eliminates the need for more time-consuming and expensive evaluation procedures.
