 ADOS-2 Course Description

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) improves an instrument already viewed as "the gold standard" for observational assessment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). WPS offers 2-day workshops that teach you how to use the ADOS-2 to assess and diagnose autism. Experienced workshop leaders describe the ADOS-2 and demonstrate administration and scoring, operationalizing diagnostic criteria for ASD. You'll have the opportunity to practice scoring while observing the instructor administer the ADOS-2 to a child with ASD. The workshop focuses primarily on Modules 1 through 4. Attendees are given materials to study later in order to complete training in the Toddler Module. This workshop is for professionals unfamiliar with the ADOS-2. Clinicians already trained in the ADOS can update their skills by reviewing the ADOS-2 Manual and completing the ADOS-2 DVD Training Upgrade Package (W-606DVD).

Learning Objectives

Following the course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of how to administer and score
    the ADOS-2

  • Explain issues in the clinical application of ADOS-2 results

  • Describe use of the ADOS-2 for operationalizing diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorders

Participants

These workshops are designed for both clinicians and researchers.

For clinicians with a prior background in autism and formal testing this 2-day workshop is sufficient to support use of the ADOS-2 to inform the diagnosis of autism and autism spectrum disorders. Physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists will be better prepared to make educational placement decisions and evaluate programs after completing the workshop.

Individuals with less background in testing but who provide service for individuals and families affected by autism may take the workshop for informational purposes.

For researchers, this workshop is prerequisite to more thorough training offered by the ADOS-2 authors and designed to achieve the high cross-site inter-rater reliability required in published research. See the section "Training Opportunities at the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain (CADB)," located at the bottom of this web page, for links to relevant training opportunities.

Confirmation and Workshop Packet

The cost of registration is $475.00 per person. Registrants will receive written confirmation, directions to the course site, a list of nearby hotels, and a packet of pre- and post-course materials. These materials include two DVDs focused on Modules 1 through 4 and one DVD/Guidebook providing training in the Toddler Module. Participants should familiarize themselves with the pre-course materials in preparation for the workshop. After the workshop, participants use the post-course materials to reinforce skills learned and complete training in the Toddler Module. If 2 weeks prior to the course you have not yet received a written confirmation, please contact WPS at 800-648-8857.

Please note, if your confirmation package is being sent to an international shipping address, customs fees will apply.

Training Opportunities at the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain (CADB)

The clinical workshop offered through WPS is a prerequisite to the more thorough research training offered by the ADOS-2 authors and their colleagues. Research training includes exercises to establish item coding accuracy to a specific criterion, and is designed to help individuals achieve the high cross-site interrater reliability that is required in published research. WPS is not involved in research training workshops. For information about research training workshops, including current dates and locations, please visit the CADB website: http://cornellpsychiatry.org/education/autism.html

CADB also offers other training opportunities, such as one-day workshops focused solely on learning the Toddler Module (for researchers and clinicians who are already trained in Modules 1-4 of the ADOS or ADOS-2). WPS is not involved in these other training opportunities. For Information about training opportunities at CADB, please visit the CADB website: http://cornellpsychiatry.org/education/autism.html
