This multidimensional instrument, developed by the author of the Conners' Rating Scales for children, helps you assess, diagnose, and treat ADHD in adults.

The CAARS includes two kinds of forms, one for Self-Report ratings and the other for Observer ratings. Both are available in long, short, and screening versions, all with impressive reliability and validity data. The long versions of each have 66 items and contain 9 empirically derived scales that assess a broad range of problem behaviors, including:

  • Inattention/Memory Problems
  • Hyperactivity/Restlessness
  • Impulsivity/Emotional Lability
  • Problems With Self-Concept

Also included on the long forms are 3 DSM-IV ADHD symptom measures and an ADHD Index that identifies respondents who might benefit from a more detailed clinical assessment. In addition, an Inconsistency Index alerts you to random or careless responding.

The short versions of each form contain abbreviated versions of the long-form subscales, plus the ADHD and Inconsistency Indexes. The screening versions include the ADHD Index and the DSM-IV ADHD Symptom Subscales (18 items). These forms are ideal when time is limited.

Depending on which forms are selected, testing time is just 10 to 20 minutes.

Norms for the Self-Report forms are based on a sample of more than 1,000 nonclinical adults (ages 18 to 80), while norms for the Observer Report are derived from the ratings of spouses, family members, and friends of 943 nonclinical adults (ages 18 to 80). Norms are separated by age intervals and gender.

The release of the CAARS represents a major development in the assessment of problem behavior associated with adult ADHD. The provision of both Self-Report and Observer Report forms permits multimodal assessment of adults with attention problems.
